WDYTYA: Angie Harmon

This weeks episode of Who Do You Think You Are? features Angie Harmon and her Revolutionary War ancestor. We all agreed that Angie truly enjoyed her time on WDYTYA and everything she learned as a result. The best part being how she shared the beginning and end of her journey with her children.

  1. I loved this show because my ancestors on both sides of my father’s family came from Germany during the Palatine Immigration (which I don’t think they mentioned), through Philadelphia. But I was a little surprised (geek alert!) that they called them indentured servants rather than redemptionists, which was what they were called. (Speaking of social history). I was also excited because I had JUST written about the problems of Germans coming in during that immigration.
They also did not approach the subject of language. Although they showed that he signed with an ‘x’ I learned that most of those first generation–and even sometimes the second generations–never spoke English. It is likely her ancestor did not speak English. The churches did not even do services in English until middle 1800’s. And the churches were also usually the only early schools.

I don’t know if you allow links, but my article about the German Immigrants is at: http://ancestorsinaprons.com/2015/03/52-ancestors-avoiding-the-storm-german-immigrants/
