Slave and Free Persons of Color Cemetery
While at Magnolia Plantation, we took some time to visit the historic African American cemetery on the grounds. According to one of our tour guides (we had three) the cemetery was for slaves and free persons of color.
The actual number of slaves held by the Drayton family has ranged from 150 to 300, depending on which tour guide we spoke with. Some of the slave families remained on the plantation after the Civil War and one family continued to live their until the 1990’s. Their are descendants of slaves that still work the property today.
Enjoy this video of the photographs I took while walking through the cemetery.
