NGS Announces Research Trip to Salt Lake City
Arlington, VA, 18 March 2015—Registration is now open for the National Genealogical Society’s guided research trip to Salt Lake City, Utah, which will take place 24–31 January 2016. Join the NGS group leaders, Marie Varrelman Melchiori, and Shirley Langdon Wilcox, CGSM, FNGS, FVGS, for a week at the world-renowned Family History Library in Salt Lake City. The library’s noteworthy records include deeds, wills, military, tax, and vital records from around the world. Researchers will have access to numerous commercial databases, more than two million rolls of microfilm, an immense collection of genealogical books, and outstanding worldwide maps. The trip includes:
- Guidance and personal research consultations from leading experts
- Online orientation to prepare for the trip
- Six days of research at the Family History Library
- Seven nights at the Salt Lake Plaza Hotel, including free internet and airport transfers
- Meet and greet on Sunday evening at the hotel
- Monday evening group lecture
- Wednesday evening pizza party
- Saturday evening group meal
- Fees, taxes, and gratuities
The cost of the trip, which does not include transportation to Salt Lake City, varies depending upon room occupancy and National Genealogical Society member status. Payment is required, in full, at the time of registration. Fees are as follows:

The trip hosts, Marie Varrelman Melchiori and Shirley Langdon Wilcox, will be available throughout the trip to help guide participants.
Marie Varrelman Melchiori specializes in records at the National Archives, Washington, D.C. Since 1988, Melchiori has lectured at NGS and the Federation of Genealogical Societies conferences. She taught at Samford University’s Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research (IGHR) and the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG). Melchiori also conducted workshops on beginning genealogy and military records for the National Archives. In 1999 and 2000, she served as a trip director for the NGS Research Trip to Ireland. She was a recipient of the Association of Professional Genealogists’ Graham T. Smallwood Jr. Award of Merit.
Shirley Langdon Wilcox served as NGS president from 1996 to 2000, and was elected as a fellow in 2001. In 2011, she became the first recipient of the NGS Shirley Langdon Wilcox Award for Exemplary Volunteerism. She is a former president of the Association of Professional Genealogists, the Fairfax Genealogical Society, the Prince George’s County Genealogical Society, and the Virginia Genealogical Society. A board-certified genealogist since 1973, Wilcox is a current member of the DAR and also serves on the board of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the District of Columbia.
Founded in 1903, the National Genealogical Society is dedicated to genealogical education, exemplary standards of research, and the preservation of genealogical records. The Arlington, Virginia, based nonprofit is the premier national society for everyone, from the beginner to the most advanced family historian, seeking excellence in publications, educational offerings, and guidance in research.
