National Famine Commemoration Day

Recently, I received an email about the National Famine Commemoration Day in County Roscommon, Ireland on May 11th in Strokestown. I was honored to be asked to assist in the activities of the day. Unfortunately, the miles (and ocean) that separates me from Ireland makes it impossible for me to attend.

They expect to draw thousands of people to this event as well as 40 Ambassadors from around the world.  The Strokestown Community Development Association has launched a 10 day festival to commemorate the famine and all those who were lost.

During this event they are looking or assistance in identifying local Famine Grave sites and then arranging to have a commemorative plaque located there. A template of the plaque is available from the Committee

If you are in the Dublin area  on May 10th, you may wish to join with the CCIFV in their commemoration this year.

For more information please see the following Facebook Groups:

I hope that if you are in the area or plan to be in the area you can join in and assist.
