Amanuensis Monday: Girl Ends Her Life

GIRL ENDS HER LIFE

While Despondent She Takes Carbolic Acid.

Chicago, July 11. _ Despondency over  a love affair is believed by the police to have caused Martha Jonas, 17 years old, 3248 Winnemac avenue, to swallow carbolic acid at her home early today.

She died at Ravenswood hospital at noon.

The girl was found unconscious in her bedroom at 1:45 o’clock this morning by her sister, Miss Augusta Jonas, who called the Summerdale police. They took her to the Ravenswood hospital. A bottle which had contained the poison is said to have been found in the room.

The girl was resuscitated at the hospital and policemen sought to learn why she had taken the poison, but she refused to talk about her act.

Miss Augusta Jonas said that her sister had not complained of being ill. She told the police the girl has been receiving attention from a young man and this led to the belief that she took the poison while despondent over a love affair.1
