During his life James was a laborer, a farm laborer and in 1910 he was a coal miner for the Riley Coal Mine, where they lived in the Riley Coal Town of Skelton, WV.
On Thursday, 22 Oct 1914 James was at the United Mine Workers Hall working as their secretary. He had a stroke that caused paralysis and hemorrhage of the brain. Unfortunately, he passed on 23 Oct 1914 at his home. He is buried in the Wildwood Cemetery.1
